Thoracoscopy or video assisted thoracoscopic surgery(VATS) is a procedure involving internal examination,biopsy or resection of disease or masses inside the thoracic or pleural cavity.

Indications are  chronic empyema resistant to medical therapy,mediastinal tumours(Thymoma,neurogenic tumours),esophageal tumours,lung biopsy.

Procedure involves 3 small subcentimeter incisions given over thoracic cavity and dissection and extraction of tumours,decortication of lung,lavage and drainage of pus. Post operative recovery is quite good with less pain, less chances of lung infection and less restriction of chest movements for lung ventilation post operatively
