Laparoscopy has been a godsend to the medical fraternity and to patients. Laparoscopic surgery or minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is also known as band-aid surgery and keyhole surgery. It is a modern surgical technique in which operations in the abdomen are performed through small incisions (usually 0.5-1.5cm) as compared to larger incisions needed in traditional surgical procedures.
There are a number of advantages with laparoscopic surgery versus an open procedure, especially for patients. These include:
- Negligible pain
- Reduced chances of developing an infection and/hemorrhaging
- Rapid recovery time
- Significantly shorter hospital stays
- Minimal scarring
Laparoscopic surgery offers the advantage of finding other complications that could have not been discovered otherwise, as the procedure offers examination of the entire abdominal area.
