Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG)

Sleeve GastrectomySleeve Gastrectomy is an irreversible procedure that curtails the size of the stomach, this operation surgically removes two thirds of the left side of the stomach. This results in a new stomach which is roughly the size and shape of a banana and looks like a sleeve or a tube.

Among the bariatric procedures, sleeve gastrectomy is the most commonly performed procedure. Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive form of weight loss surgery that limits the capacity of the stomach to 60 cc - 150 cc. Unlike other forms of bariatric surgery, the outlet valve and the nerves to the stomach remain intact.

As the procedure reduces the size of the stomach one begins to consume less food leading to weight loss. This procedure also eliminates the hunger inducing hormone called 'Ghrelin', hence patients feel full after consuming small amounts of food, and lose weight quickly.

FAQs
Is Sleeve Gastrectomy a complicated operation?
Sleeve gastrectomy is a fairly simple procedure that is performed laparoscopically. The procedure takes about 45 mins to an hour to perform and requires only a night's stay in the hospital.
Will it be painful?
There is a minimal amount of discomfort for the first 3-4 days, that can be negated by taking painkillers.
Are there any side effects?
As it is a restrictive procedure, you will not be able to eat as much as you did before the operation. The procedure does not alter your stomach's mechanism drastically hence there are no long term complications. The total complication rate after this surgery is less than 1 % which is the same as any other surgery like a gall bladder or a hip replacement surgery.
How much and how fast will I lose weight?
You will lose about 80% of your excess body weight over a period of one and a half years. Out of this the fastest weight loss occurs within the first 3 to 4 months, after which the rate of weight loss slows down.
How long does the surgery take?
It takes about 45 mins to an hour.
How long do I need to stay in the hospital?
You will need to be hospitalised for 1 night and 2 days.
How many incisions will be there on my tummy?
There will be 5 small cuts on your tummy. The largest cut is about 1 cm. These marks will fade away over time.
Do I need to take bed rest after the surgery?
No. We encourage you to walk on the same evening of the surgery. We would want you to be active and mobile as it reduces the risk for deep vein thrombosis also.
When can I get back to work?
You may return to work within a week. It depends on your comfort level, most patients resume work within 4-5 days while few others prefer to take up to 10 days rest.
Can I smoke and drink after the surgery?
It is not advisable to smoke and drink after the surgery. You may not even feel like doing so. Please use this opportunity to stop smoking and drinking.
Will I regain weight after this surgery?
No. However you need to be careful with the liquid calorie intake as consumption of small frequent amounts of liquids could lead to increased caloric intake.
Can I eat anything or are there any dietary restrictions after the surgery?
You will need to be on a liquid diet for 15 days after the surgery. This is followed by 15 days of semi-solid foods and then you progress onto solids. Within 2 to 3 months you can have all kinds of foods though in limited quantities.
Will this procedure affect my sex life?
No, this procedure will not affect your sex life negatively; instead most patients have recorded a tremendous improvement in their sex lives.
Should I discontinue oral contraception before surgery?
No, instead you must be more cautious as the chances of conceiving improves greatly after bariatric surgery.
Can I conceive after the surgery?
Yes you can. However we recommend that you conceive after a year and a half of surgery. The period of weight loss is not good for the baby's nutritional status. Our gynaecologists will guide you through the pregnancy.
