The Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) is an independent, nonprofit organization that advances the safety, efficacy and efficiency of bariatric and metabolic surgery worldwide. The Center of Excellence (COE) designation is awarded simultaneously to individual surgeons and the facility in which they perform bariatric procedures. On 12th March 2011 this status was jointly awarded to the Department of Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery at Saifee Hospital in Mumbai, Center for Obesity and Diabetes Surgery and the surgeons Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala and Dr. Aparna Bhasker. The designees successfully met the program's comprehensive requirements, and completed the rigorous review and site inspection process required for COE designation.

Research has consistently shown that patient outcomes are significantly better at Centers of Excellence. This may be attributed to factors including high volumes of surgeries performed at these facilities, excellence in infrastructure/facility set up, program support by the hospital, state of the art equipment and highly qualified staff (surgical and allied health) as well as the implementation of standard operating protocols and clinical guidelines to minimize complications and enhance patient care and surgery outcomes, especially a marked lowering in complication rates.
