Making a donation to contribute to the Mumbai Marathon

CODS donates to, and supports the Mumbai Marathon because it not only draws attention to the issues faced by the city and country, but also promotes health and fitness; a cause that is the keystone of CODS’ activities.

In this letter to Dr. Lakdawala, the individuals behind Mumbai marathon thank CODS for the support:

Dear Muffi,

At the onset I would like to apologize for the delay in sending this letter. As the Mumbai Marathon is the biggest fund raising event in India, it took a while for the accounts to be reconciled.

The Marathon on Sunday January 20th was once again a wonderful accomplishment for me and my colleagues.

We used the Mumbai Marathon to spread awareness on various issues that affect our city and our country and to showcase how children had made a real difference!  We even got our 15 seconds of fame when we were covered live on National Television!

I would like to THANK YOU with deep sincerity for the precious money donated by you to a cause so dear to my heart.  In the big crowd of people, I was spurred on, knowing that you had put that faith in me.  Your valuable contribution helped me not only reach my pledged amount but also surpass it!

I look forward to your continued support and promise you that together with the children We Will Make a Difference to Mumbai City and to our country!

Attached are a few pics for you to see.

Thank you again.
Warm regards
Reena

Medical Camp - Sumerpur, Rajasthan

One of the tenets at CODS is to extend the advantages of laparoscopic surgery to the poorest of people in India. The annual free diagnostic and surgical camp in Sumerpur, Rajasthan is one such initiative under the leadership of Dr. Lakdawala. The maiden camp was launch in the year 2003.

An entire team consisting of expert laparoscopic surgeons, nursing staff and ward boys spends a few days in Sumerpur and performs basic and advanced laparoscopic surgeries free of charge for the impoverished people of Sumerpur and the surrounding areas who wait the year round so that they may be able to attend this camp and avail of the clinical expertise on hand. Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital provides the physical infrastructure to facilitate this process and needy patients present with ailments such as gallstones, hernias, appendicitis and gynaecological problems. Patient selection criteria are based solely on poverty levels and lack of access to expert clinical care. Surgery volume varies between 50-75 procedures over the course of these 3 days.

CODS has donated an entire laparoscopy kit  to Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital at its medical camp in 2009 and has trained the in-house surgeon to use the equipments, who trained with Dr Lakdawala for a few weeks in Mumbai.

Sponsorship for laparoscopic surgery for underprivileged patients at Saifee Hospital

CODS undertakes laparoscopic procedures for financially disadvantages patients at Saifee Hospital regularly. In addition to waiving surgeon fees, CODS proactively assumes the expenses for medicines and equipment costs that are levied by the hospital as well.

Diabetes Diagnosis Camps

CODS sponsors and conducts diabetes diagnosis camps all over Maharashtra. As part of this initiative, blood pressure and blood sugar levels are assessed for ‘walk-ins’. A team consisting of plastic surgeons, general surgeons, vascular surgeons, endocrinologists and diabetologists attend to people with diabetic foot syndrome or those who have had feet amputated as a result of diabetes and vascular complications

HealthStart-School Nutrition and healthy living education program
We at CODS firmly believe that the only way to stem the tide is to target and educate the most vulnerable and impressionable demographic we have: our children!

GLOBAL RESEARCH SHOWS A STRONG CORRELATION BETWEEN OBESE CHILDREN BECOMING OBESE ADULTS

In a recent survey conducted in all the five metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata it has been noted that two out of every five-school going children are overweight. If this trend continues, the next 10 years will see the number of obese children double!

WHY IS THIS SITUATION OF SUCH TREMENDOUS CONCERN?
  • Diabetes, the new Scourge: India is officially the Diabetes Capital of the world. 70% of Diabetes is obesity related and it is ravaging the young like never before
  • Genetics: Indian babies have a much higher body fat % at birth than their Caucasian counterparts (60% versus 30%)
  • Greater scope for morbidity and reduced life span: The illnesses associated with obesity take hold of and destroy the mind, body and spirit over a prolonged period of time since they are acquired so early on in life. This reduces the chances of attaining an average lifespan many fold
  • We have the world’s youngest demographic: We have tremendous potential that can be harnessed productively. Obesity as a disease will inflict terrible psychological, physiological, social and economic consequences on the country.

TURNING THE TIDE: OUR SCHOOL BASED PLAN OF ACTION:

CODS has earmarked 25 Mumbai schools (PHASE I) to roll out its pilot nutrition and health living education program, HEALTHSTART in a phase-wise manner over a period of 12 months. The target age is group is students in grades III through VIII.
