The Bioenteric Intragastric Balloon or BIB is non-surgical temporary method for weight loss. This procedure is especially effective for people who want to lose 5 to 20 kgs. The BIB has proven to be especially effective for people who have failed to lose or maintain weight consistently with diets and exercise. It is also a useful procedure for patients who are super super obese and are at a high risk for surgery. BIB insertion reduces surgical risk by getting weight down by 20-22 kgs.
The procedure involves the endoscopic insertion of a silicon balloon into the stomach. This delivers a feeling of satiety, or lack of hunger, leading to decreased consumption thus aiding weight loss. The maximum placement period for the Intragastric Balloon is 6 months after which it needs to be removed.
Will I be able to feel the balloon in my stomach?
There will be slight discomfort for the first 2-3 days after which the primary sensation of the BIB is a feeling of satiety.
Can I eat anything I want? Are there any food restrictions?
You will not feel like eating as much as you used to. In addition, if you eat fatty foods or sweets, you may feel nauseous. Excessive overeating while the BIB is in place is not advisable.
Are there side-effects or complications with the BIB?
No. However most patients do mention a feeling of cramping, nausea and vomiting in the first 2-3 days. It is important to follow a doctor's instructions and drink plenty of fluids.
Do I need to be admitted in the hospital for this procedure?
No. The BIB is an endoscopic procedure hence a patient can go home immediately after the procedure.
Does the BIB require frequent visits to the doctor after the procedure?
It is important to see the doctor once a month in order to monitor the progress. The follow-up program is critical to success with the BIB and in learning new lifestyle skills.
Does the BIB limit activity?
For the first week after the procedure it is advisable to avoid any strenuous activities like weight lifting etc. Once the body has adjusted to the BIB, you may continue everyday activities. Starting a regular exercise program is highly recommended and will improve your success.
What happens if the BIB leaks?
If the intragastric balloon leaks you may no longer have a feeling of satiety. You will also begin to pass blue coloured urine temporarily. If the BIB deflates, it will most likely pass through your body naturally, but in some cases it may need to be removed by your doctor. It is important to stay calm as there is no possible damage that can be incurred.
How is the BIB removed?
The BIB is removed endoscopically through the mouth in the same manner it was inserted. The 10-minute procedure is performed under sedation and doesn't require admission to a hospital.
Should I discontinue oral contraception before BIB insertion?
No, instead you must be more cautious as the chances of conceiving improve considerably.
